A life dependent on the sea
The south coast of Kenya, particularly in areas like Diani, is a region steeped in history, culture, and natural beauty. Once a vital part of ancient trade routes connecting East Africa to the Middle East and Asia, this coastline has long been a melting pot of diverse influences. The Swahili culture, with its rich traditions and vibrant heritage, reflects centuries of interaction with the Indian Ocean world.
This collection captures a life deeply intertwined with the natural rhythms and abundance of the ocean. From the timeless art of dhow sailing to the vibrant local markets brimming with fresh seafood, these images celebrate the harmony between coastal communities and their environment.
However, the state of fishing here highlights a delicate balance. While the ocean provides sustenance and livelihoods for many, questions of sustainability loom large. Traditional practices often coexist with pressures from overfishing and modern exploitation. Through this series, I aim to reflect not only the beauty and resilience of these communities but also the urgent need to protect their way of life and the ocean's fragile ecosystem
